P&C Insurance (Home Owner) Product Development

CUSTOMER

A provider of core insurance software committed to delivering on its vision to change the status quo through the application of disruptive technologies.

CHALLENGE

The client set out to build a comprehensive Property & Casualty (P&C) Home Insurance product tailored specifically for the complex Florida market.

Florida’s homeowner insurance landscape is one of the most demanding in the United States, requiring stringent compliance with state-specific regulations, complex rating structures, and detailed underwriter approval paths. The platform needed to support high-performance transactions across multiple functional modules, including real-time quoting, policy administration, billing schedules, and claims processing.

To deliver this ambitious roadmap, the client established a large-scale product engineering team of 70 developers, QA specialists, and business analysts, requiring a reliable technology partner to accelerate the development of core features.

COGNIC’S SOLUTION

Cognic collaborated closely with the client’s engineering organization, providing skilled developers and architects to build and integrate critical functional areas of the core P&C Home Insurance product.

Using a performant technology stack of ASP.NET (MVC) and SQL Server, Cognic helped develop several key modules:

1. Quote & Policy Administration

Developed policy administration and coverage tracking screens optimized for Florida homeowner policy types, including HO3-C (Citizen), HO3-FL, HO4-FL, DP3-FL (Fire), and HO6-FL. This included building dynamic premium calculators based on regional wind, sinkhole, and fire risk variables.

2. Product Configuration Engine

Designed a flexible product configuration module that allows underwriters to dynamically adjust coverage limits, deductibles, and rules without requiring code changes, accelerating response times to market shifts.

3. Billing & Accounting Module

Implemented robust billing schedules supporting 1-Pay, 2-Pay, and 4-Pay installment plans. Built automated dunning workflows for non-payment notices, grace periods, policy cancellation triggers, and refund transaction processing.

4. Distribution & Channel Management

Created the Distribution Module to manage complex hierarchy channels across independent agents, broker networks, distribution partners, parent companies, and internal departments.

5. Claims Processing & Automation

Supported the development of both manual claims adjustment tools and automated claims adjudication rules to accelerate payout turnarounds while maintaining fraud safeguards.

6. Policy Endorsements & Reinsurance

Built transaction tracking for mid-term policy endorsements (modifications to active policies) and reinsurance allocation modules to track liability distribution across secondary carriers.

7. Power BI Reporting

Designed and integrated interactive Power BI reports to provide real-time dashboards for loss ratios, active policies, billing outstanding, and underwriter queue metrics.
